So you’re going to attend your first yoga class. What can you expect? Yoga classes offer attendants a relaxing and restorative work out with an emphasis on breathing and connecting with your body. It’s the perfect workout for after work or just to finish the week off strong. Here are 5 things you can expect from your first yoga class:

Breathing- During yoga class there is a focus on your breathing or pranayama. You’ll learn techniques such as breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Breathing is so important in any yoga practice as it helps our bodies flow through each of the poses with ease

Meditation- Whether it’s at the start of class or the end expect to try a little meditation. You may start your practice in a comfortable seated position with your eyes closed and your focus drawn inward. Or you may find yourself laying in shavasana at the end of class with your eyes closed for about 10 minutes. Don’t feel discouraged to try meditation during your first practice. It’s as simple as quieting the mind even if only for a few seconds.

Poses- Expect to try some unique poses. Some poses you may find easy and some you may find difficult. What matters in yoga is that you give all the poses a try. With enough practice you will master each one with ease.

Relaxation- The combination of your breath and the gentle flow of practice and you’ll find yourself in a state of relaxation. You’ll leave class recharged and rejuvenated.

Guidance- When you attend yoga classes at Everbalance, you will find how helpful each of the instructors can be throughout your practice. They can help guide you through your yoga journey and if you have any questions they are always there to help!

What do I wear?

For your first yoga class you’ll want to wear comfortable athletic clothes that are not too baggy. Yoga pants and a shirt are acceptable for girls and guys can wear basketball shorts and a shirt.

What do I need to bring to class?

You can bring your own mat but our studio has mats you can borrow. Bring a towel and water if you feel you’d need it. During class some instructors will suggest utilizing blocks and straps to help with some of the poses. Don’t worry about having to go out and buy those, we have them as well!
